We normally abbreviate the phrase Content Management System to its initials, CMS, in discussions. A basic description of a CMS is a web-based information system used to publish and display content in a collaborative environment. One normally consists of at least one database containing the actual data found in the site, as well as various settings, lists of users, permissions that are granted to those users, and more. Images, video, and audio files may be stored on the server within the site, or embedded if stored elsewhere. The system simplifies the task of storing, retrieving, and altering data; thus improving the ease of keeping a site fresh and current.
Choosing the best type of CMS for a given site is dependent upon several factors. These can include such things as the environment it will be used in (web, Intranet, server type), number of users involved, complexity of metrics/controls/features desired, budget, and licensing. We encourage those interested in hearing our opinions on this topic to register so a process for making such a determination can begin.
